The Hidden Risk in Youth Sports: Why Custom Athletic Mouthguards Are a Game-Changer

The Safety Gap in Youth Sports
Every year, young athletes across Canada hit the field, rink, or court with confidence—but without proper protection. Dental injuries are among the most common and costly outcomes of contact sports, yet studies show that only one in five athletes actually wear a mouthguard. Why? Discomfort, poor fit, and cost often get in the way.
This article explores why custom athletic mouthguards are the most effective solution for preventing injuries—and how choosing the right fit could mean the difference between staying in the game or sitting out with a dental emergency.

What Is an Athletic Mouthguard?
An athletic mouthguard or a sports mouthguard is a removable dental appliance designed to fit over the upper teeth and gums. Its main job is to protect against injuries like tooth fractures, tooth loss, and soft tissue lacerations. When an athlete receives a blow to the jaw or mouth, a mouthguard acts as a shock absorber, distributing the force and reducing the risk of serious injury.
According to a 2007 study, athletes who don’t wear a mouthguard are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to suffer injuries than those who do.

3 Common Types of Mouthguards
There are several types of athletic mouthguards available on the market, each offering a different level of fit and protection:
  1. Stock Mouthguards: These are “one-size-fits-all" and sold in stores. They are the least expensive but also the least protective. They often feel bulky and require clenching to stay in place, which can restrict breathing and speech.
  2. Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Slightly better than stock versions, these are softened in hot water and then shaped by biting into them. While they offer a better fit, they often become loose over time and still require clenching.
  3. Custom-Fabricated Mouthguards: Made from a mold of the athlete’s teeth, these provide the best fit, highest comfort, and superior protection. They allow athletes to breathe and speak normally without clenching and are more durable over time.

What Makes a Proper Mouthguard?
The effectiveness of a mouthguard comes down to its fit and quality. A properly fitted athletic mouthguard should:
  • Be at least 3mm thick to keep the jaws separated
  • Be comfortable to wear
  • Be durable and long-lasting
  • Allow the wearer to breathe and speak easily
  • Stay in place without clenching

Why Aren't More Athletes Wearing Them?
Despite clear evidence that mouthguards reduce injury risk, many players still don’t wear them. Cultural attitudes, lack of enforcement from coaches and officials, and especially cost are major factors.
In a survey of parents with soccer-playing children, the cost of a custom mouthguard ranged from $60 to $285. Yet 24% of those parents were unwilling to pay more than $25—even though the cost of treating a dental injury can be far higher.

Custom Mouthguards: The Solution Worth Investing In
Given the risk, the cost of a properly fitted mouthguard is a smart investment in your athlete’s safety and long-term health. Custom mouthguards provide the comfort and performance that young athletes need to stay protected—without interfering with their game.
Access to these high-quality mouthguards is now more convenient and affordable. Professionals like Glenna, founder of Dental Armour in Ottawa, have dedicated their careers to helping local athletes protect their smiles with expertly crafted, custom-fitted mouthguards.
